Chapter 1. Home
It’s been five weeks since I ran into Michael and Liam. I thought I had moved on. But seeing them together, like brothers. It made me wish I could take it all back. That I’d chosen one of them instead of leaving them both. Althought, I’m not sure if I could have chosen only one. I love both of them and if I would’ve chosen one, I would’ve lost the other. I know it’s selfish and unfair to want them both. But love’s the only thing you can’t control. This is also the first time I’ve fallen in love with anyone as a vampire. None of my relationships has mattered to me before. Not since I turned. I decided to go see Rebekah. She’s always been there for me, whenever I needed her to. Even if she’s in the middle of something important for her. I felt kinda bad for her when she left her friends wedding to help me. I had just left my abusive ex boyfriend named Lee after he tried to rape me. He got upset and tried to kill me. He was also a werewolf. And older than me. And older means stronger when it comes to supernatural creatures. Lee had anger issues. He lost control easy. I know werewolves can be temperamental, but Lee… he was unpredictable. And mean. He saw women as properties. I would’ve never gone out with him if I’d known that. But when I had started dating him, I was to afraid to end it. That’s why I wanted Rebekah to help me. She told me to break up with him before he could hurt me for real.Which makes me think about that time he broke a couple of my ribs.
We had just been out on a date and I followed him home. We just watched a movie and when the movie ended I wanted to go home instead of spending the night with him. He got mad and said he decided when I go and what I do. I tried to leave again, but then he caught me by the arm and threw me into the wall. I broke a few ribs, so I couldn’t fight back. And he made me stay at his house for the night. The morning after he apologized. He said these exact words;
– I’m sorry I hit you baby, but you should know better than to make me mad. And you should treat me better after everything I’ve done for you.
I wanted to scream to him that he hasn’t done anything for me exept giving me bruises. I was so angry I wanted to rip him apart. I sat down on a chair in the kitchen, because I was too afraid to leave. Then he came up behind me and started kissing my neck.And he kept saying ”you’re mine.” I knew what he wanted. I didn’t want to. But I didn’t know how to tell him so I told him my chest still hurt. From him throwing me into the wall last night. He didn’t seem to care and just kept going. He made me stand up and put his hand inside my shirt pulling me closer to him. He was still kissing my neck and I tried to walk away. That made him snap and he pulled me closer again. He started walking toward the bedroom. I told him to stop and to let me go. But he didn’t listen. I tried to get loose and told him to let me go. But then he grabbed me by the hair and whispered in my ear;
– Do not tell me what to do! You will do what I want you to do and right now I want you to go to the bedroom and take off your clothes! You’re nothing! You’re weak and you will do as I say!
Then he dragged me into the bedroom and threw me on the bed. I tried to get up but he pushed me down. He tore my shirt off of me and threw it on the floor. When he was taking off his own shirt I came up with a plan. I decided to flirt with him. Make him believe I thought I was nothing. Then I would do something to distract him or something. Maybe hit him in the head. Anything to distract him would work. Then I would run. Just run. And so I did. I said;
– I’m sorry baby. You’re right. I’m weak. I’m nothing. I’m sorry.
I think he bought it, because he started kissing me and playing with my hair. I kissed him back and when he had let his guard down, I pushed him away. Hard enought to knock him out for a few minutes. Then I ran. Faster than I ever had before. I didn’t even stop to get my shirt. When I finally stopped I realized I was only wearing a bra and shorts. Apparently so did a few men. Old creepy men. I went to buy a shirt and everyone stared at me like I was insane. Then I called Rebekah. But before she came, Lee found me at a motel and tried to kill me for leaving him. He even brought his own special stake that he said was made specially for me. Luckily, Rebekah came before he could actually kill me. She used his own stake to stab him in the gut and told him that if he ever even looked at me again, she would personally hunt him down and break every bone in his body. Rebeckah was older than Lee and he knew it. He knew he didn’t stand a chance against her. I know what you’re all thinking. What didn’t she just kill him? But you see.. she’s strongly against killing. She knew he was scared of her and that he wouldn’t touch me again as long as she lived. So no, she didn’t kill him. She doesn’t like killing anyone. Not even demons like ourselves. It was part of her charm. She may seem shy and kinda weird at first. But when you get to know her, you can see how truly amazing she really is. She would do anything for the people she loves and she’s the sweetest person I know. Unless you really piss her off. You really don’t want her mad at you. She could do things ten times worse than what she treathened to do to Lee. And so could I. I’ve learned to fight back and now I’m stronger than ever. Strong enough that even I could kill Lee.
When I got to Rebekahs house, no one answered the door. Something just felt wrong. When I turned, I learned to trust my instincts. And my instincts told me to run. I had no idea why. But I ran. When I finally was able to calm down, I went back only to find my friends house a mess. It looked like there’d been a fight. But that wasen’t the worst part. Rebekah was gone. I tried calling her at least twenty times and I sent her about twelve messages. I was having an anxiety attack. I haven’t had one since Lee. I sat down on the floor in my missing friends living room. And I cried. After an hour I pulled myself together and I tried to figure out how to find her. I came up with nothing. I’m not good at tracking people. Not even humans. I considered calling the police but then I thought, what could they do. They wouldn’t be able to fight vampires’ or whatever it was that took Rebekah. They’re only human. So I decided to go to an old acquaintance. My biological father’s friend Ian. I’ve never met my real parents. I don’t even know what their names are or what they look like. And I’ve never cared. Anyway… Ian came to my house a few years ago. Saying he’s my fathers friend. I was good at reading people and he was telling the truth. He said my father had sent him to protect me. He knows everything I do. I don’t see him except for when he comes to tell me something my father wants me to know. Or just to mess with me. He likes to flirt and sometimes he stops by for a visit. Mostly when I’ve started dating someone. I don’t know why but I trust him. Even though I don’t really know anything about him. He lives in Boston. Just a few hours from here. I went home to get my car. It’s the best thing I’ve ever bought. A black Chevrolet Impala.
When I’d been driving for two hours I stopped to get in a place that looked like it was taken from a horror movie. A gas station in the middle of nowhere and you’re the only customer. Then you get stuck there for some reason and you get murdered. This placed seemed like one of those movies. I didn’t want to stop there, but I really needed gas and it was the only gas station around. So I stopped there. Big mistake. As soon as I got out of the car I got a really bad feeling. Like really bad. I waited
impatiently for the tank to get full. When I was done, I ran to the other side of the car. I couldn’t get out of here fast enough. But I was too slow. When I tried to open the car door someone pushed me away and slamed the door shut. Hard enough for the window to break. I looked up at the attacker. It was a man. Or.. actually it was a Theriaka demon. They’re very strong. It’s one of the many different kinds of shapeshifters. I could hear more demons coming closer and form a circle around me. I couldn’t run. I had to fight. I didn’t have time to think about why they wanted to kill me or whatever they planned on doing to me. I saw someone attack at my right and I dodged his fist. I kicked him in the chest, and he fell. I guess those self-defense classes Rebekah made me go to finally paid off. Their leader looked at me with wondering eyes.
– Self-defense classes, I told him.
He just nodded and told the others to hold me still so that he could kill me. Two of them grabbed me from behind while the leader took out a stake from his coat pocket. I tried to get free but they were just too strong.
– What? No begging for you life? The leader asked me.
– No. I’m saving that for someone brave enough to fight me himself. I said.
Hoping that he would be offended and fight me. Then I would at least have a chance to win. But I had no such luck. Instead, he just laughed at me and walked towards me. With the stake in his hand. But before he could kill me. Someone shot him with a silver bullet. The only way to kill any kind of shapeshipter is to drive something made of pure silver through its heart. As his body, corps, whatever, fell down to the ground. I saw Ian with a grin on his face. ”Showoff”, I thought. I was grateful though. He had just saved my life. He took care of the others pretty quick. Some of them ran away. Surrendered. Cowards. Ian helped me get back up on my feet. One of the men that had held me, had thrown me on the ground while trying to get away from Ian. He made his usual jokes about how I always needed to be saved. The annoying thing wasn’t the jokes. It was that he’s right. Then he got serious. He told me to get into his car. That’s when I knew something was wrong. I tried to get him to tell me what was going on, but he’s so damn stubborn. But he did promise to tell me. After I’ve gotten into the car. I refused.
– Damn it Rose! You will get into the car even if I have to drag you there! Ian yelled.
He was angry. He used his angry voice. He almost never screamed at me. Only when it had something to do with my father.
– What does he want this time? I asked him.
– I’ll be happy to tell you that. If you get into the car.
By the way he looked at me, I knew there was no point in arguing. So I got into the car andhe started driving towards Boston. He said his orders were to take me home.
– I don’t know what you’ve been doing instead of working. And neither do I care, but you’re going the wrong way, I said sarcastically.
– Not that home. Your real home. Your father will explain everything when we get there.
– My father? As in the father you’re working for?
– Yes. That father.
– But… he cut me off before I could finish my question.
– Don’t ask me why and whatever other questions you have. I’m not allowed to tell you anything. My order was to bring you home. That’s it. He wants to be the one to tell you.
– Yeah? ‘Cause you always do what you’re told? Did he order you to kiss me when I was attacked by Ferucco demons?
– You’re still hung up on that? I mean, I know I’m a good kisser. But really?
– It happened a week ago!
– Which only proves that you’re incapable to take care of youself. You obviously need a man around to…
He stopped there knowing he’d just pissed me off, big time. I have a bad history with men. Men who thought women are weak and woth less then men. So get really pissed when a man, especially Ian, says something sexsistic like that. And since Ians job was to protect me at all time. He knew everything about my previous reletionships. It kinda upset me that my father had sent some guy to protect me when he had never wben met me. It’s like he believes he can control my life and me without ever meeting me. Well… that was about to change. I couldn’t believe that I was actually going to meet my biological father. Ian asked me why I was out there in the middle of nowhere. But I was still mad at him, so I just looked out the window. Not talking to him. He gave up after ten minutes. He knew I could go days without talking. He put on a CD instead. Skillets album Awake. He knew I loved their music and this was his way of trying to get me in a good mood. After four hours of driving he told me to get some rest. It was a long way home. Wherever home was.
Five hours later, I’m asleep. Dreaming about Lee, what he did to me, and Rebekah. What had happened to her? The worst part was that I wasn’t there to help her. I ran away. Rebekah was the one who told me to trust my instincts. But I’m not so sure about that anymore. What good are they if they make me run like a scared little girl instead of helping the ones I care about? I must’ve talked in my sleep or something, because Ian woke me up. We were standing still on a turning point on the road. And he looked really worried. Like he cared for me. And not just because I’m his boss’s kid. As if he had read my mind, he leaned closer to me and kissed me. I was to surprised to do anything at first. Then I realized that this was actually happening, and I kissed him back. I didn’t know where this would leave us. Would we be a couple? Was it just a one time thing? I didn’t care about that at the moment. I was busy trying to get my hair out of his necklace. Now you’re all thinking; what the hell?! Why aren’t they kissing. We were. But then, when thing got a little more interesting, my hair got caught in his necklace. When we finally seperated the hair from the necklace, there was uncomfortable silence. Then, all of a sudden, we started laughing. I don’t know if it was all the tension being released or if we really thought it was funny or if we’d just had too little sleep. Maybe all of the above? I didn’t really care. I don’t think he did either. We stopped at McDonalds to get some food about half an hour later. I hadn’t noticed I was hungry until then. I know, I know. I’m a vampire. I don’t eat food. I drink blood. But the truth is, we can eat human food. It’s not a problem for us. I like human food. Especially ice cream. Ben & Jerry’s! But I wasn’t hungry for food. I needed blood. Ian told me he would get some from a hospital nearby. It was only a twenty minutes drive. But twenty minutes can do a lot of damage. If it weren’t for the fact that I was in a car that’s moving, I would have walked up to the nearest human and killed him or her in the middle of the street. That’s how hungry I was. And I don’t even kill. I find it unessesary to kill when you could just erase their memory. Rebekah doesn’t even feed off of humans. She drinks blood from the hospital. Like I said before, she doesn’t like to kill. And she doesn’t like to hurt anyone either. Luckily Ians supplier met us outside. Which meant I couldn’t kill anyone. I looked at the supplier. He was just a boy. Not older than fiftheen. He shouldn’t have to know about the things that lives in the dark. Or, so says the myths. Vampires can walk in the sunlight. Without sparkling, like they do in Twiligh. The thought that vampires’ sparkle is ridicolus. Even though the books and movies are good. And we don’t nead old rings to protect us either, as they do in The Vampire Diaires. Even though they got some fact wrong, I like The Vampire Diaries. But in reality, the first vampires didn’t show up a thousands years ogo. No. In reality, the first vampires showed up in the beginning of time. Supernatural beings like vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters and other demons has always been here. Walking around with humans. But only a few of the human race knows of our existance. And it’s importand it stays that way. Because, just like in The Vampire Diaries, humans was well aware of our existance. And they tried to kill all of us. Now, the ones who know about us keeps it a secret. In this time, half of the humans would be scared of us, and the other half would want to be like us. The world is obsessed with vampires and werewolves and the supernatural. But I’m not gonna bore you with history.
Once I had eaten and gotten blood, I was myself again. I hated being controlled by hunger. I now realized, I had no idea of what kind of creature Ian is. All I really knew about him was that he’s immortal, he has superhuman strengt and speed and that he works for my father. He’s not a vampire, nor a werewolf or shapeshifter. Which is the only kind of demons, I know of, that looks like humans and has those qualities. I was about to ask him when someone in front of us drove into the reiling. Causing our car to crash into the car in front of us and flip around.
– Are you okay? Ian asked me when the car finally stopped spinning around.
– Yeah, I’m good. You?
– I’ll live.
We got out of the car and waited for the ambulance to show up. Or rather, Ian got out of the car and then helped me out. My seat belt was stuck and I couldn’t rip it off. I had to keep my hands on the car roof. If I wouldn’t have wanted to break my neck or something. The car was upside down. Breaking my neck wouldn’t have killed me. But it would have hurt like hell and give me a major headache. I felt a little dizzy and out of it. When I began to be a little wobbly, Ian took me too a bench to sit down. Well, he started to. But after just one step, I almost passed out. I began to fall but Ian caught me and helped me lay down. He sat beside me until the police and amulances came. While I was put in the ambulance, Ian called my father to tell him that we would be a bit delayed. Then he went with me to the hospital. So that he could keep them from checking my pulse and do some test. So that they wouldn’t know I’m dead. Or living dead. Call it whatever you want. I passed out a few minutes after we arrived at the hospital. And when I woke up Ian was sitting next to me. Actually, he was sleeping. He was cute when he was sleeping. A nurse came in to check on me and I told her not to wake him up.
– How long have I been out? I asked the blonde, way to skinny nurse.
– 27 hours, Ms Hamilton.
I spent the rest of the night watching Ian. Sure, it was only one and a half hour. When I looked away, only for a few seconds, he woke up.
– Rose? Are you awake?
I looked back at him. His eyes were green. I’ve never noticed that before. They looked so honest.
– What are you? I asked him.
– What? He seemed chocked at first. But he answered me anyway.
– You’ve never told me what you are. So what are you?
– I’m a fallen.
– A fallen? I was confused. I had never heard of such a creature.
– Yeah, you know…
